STRANGE AND SURPRISING AUTO LAWS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY

Across the country, drivers are aware of the basic laws and rules of the road. However, not all traffic laws are the same from state to state. Did you know that it is illegal to drive with a gorilla in the backseat of your car in Massachusetts? Or that in Georgia you can spit from a truck, but not from a car or bus? Here is a list of 30 traffic laws from across the country that range from common sense to just plain weird.

  1. In Alabama, it is illegal to drive while blindfolded.
  2. It is illegal to tie a dog to the roof of your car in Alaska.
  3. You can’t nap on the street in Eureka, California, as it’s illegal to “use the road as a bed.”
  4. Sorry gardeners, in Chico, California it’s illegal to plant rutabagas in roadways.
  5. It’s illegal, and unwise, to jump from a car going 65 mph in Glendale, California.
  6. Watch your drink in Hermosa Beach, California as it is illegal to spill your margarita on the street.
  7. It is against the law to hunt from your car in Connecticut.
  8. Officials in Dublin, Georgia made it illegal to drive through playgrounds.
  9. If you are over the age of 88, it is illegal for you to drive a motorcycle in Idaho.
  10. When on a bicycle, “fancy riding” is prohibited in Galesburg, Illinois.
  11. In Indiana, you cannot sell a vehicle on Sunday.
  12. Don’t screech your tires in Derby, Kansas. It is considered a misdemeanor that could cost you up to 30 days in jail.
  13. In Fort Thomas, Kentucky you need to keep a close eye on your dog! You may get a fine if your dog “molests” a vehicle.
  14. Watch your mouth in Rockville, Maryland as swearing from a vehicle is considered a misdemeanor.
  15. Keep your car clean In Minnetonka, Minnesota. If you drive a vehicle that leaves mud, dirt or sticky substances on any road you will be considered a public nuisance that is harming the general welfare of the town and could be fined.
  16. It is illegal to honk the horn of another person’s car in University City, Missouri.
  17. It is against the law to leave sheep unescorted in a truck in Montana.
  18. In Reno, Nevada it is illegal to place a bench or chair in the middle of the road.
  19. In New Jersey, residents are required to honk before passing another vehicle on the road.
  20. Don’t change your clothes in the car in Sag Harbor, New York, as it is illegal to disrobe in your vehicle there.
  21. Stay on the roads in North Carolina. In Dunn, it is illegal to drive on the sidewalk or through a cemetery.
  22. It is also illegal to play in traffic in Dunn, North Carolina.
  23. In Canton, Ohio you are not allowed to roller skate on the streets. Doing so could result in a fine up to $1,000.
  24. In Oklahoma, you will be fined if you read a comic book while driving.
  25. You can be ticketed if you leave your car door open longer than is deemed necessary in Oregon.
  26. It is illegal to drive with a beer in your vehicle, even if it is unopened, in Scituate, Rhode Island.
  27. Due to rat problems, it is illegal to store trash in your vehicle in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
  28. It is illegal to throw items that are on fire from your vehicle in Utah.
  29. In West Virginia, it is legal to scavenge road kill.
  30. In Wisconsin, you will be fined $10 for camping on a public highway.
