What are common exhaust problems?
Not only is the exhaust system in place to keep your car running quietly, but it is also responsible for moving exhaust fumes away from the cabin of the vehicle, making sure your engine continues to run properly, reducing emissions, and maintaining optimal fuel efficiency.
The most common cause for exhaust wear or damage is rust. Depending on how severe the vehicle’s rust problem is, it can potentially lead to structural damage and even complete failure of the exhaust system.
To help prevent or limit rust erosion, avoid going on several short trips in your vehicle. On shorter journeys, the water vapor that accumulates in the system does not have the time to fully evaporate so it cools and pools in the exhaust system increasing the chances of building up rust. In rare, extreme cases, the exhaust pipe has been known to become so loose due to erosion that it starts dragging on the road. Should you experience this, bring your vehicle in right away. If your vehicle is unsafe to drive, call a roadside assistance company to help you bring it in.
Brackets, and other parts like the heat shield or pieces of the exhaust pipe coming loose are also common exhaust system problems. If you should hear a rattling noise under your vehicle this could be the case, and you should have your exhaust system looked at right away. Missing brackets and loose parts will put additional structural stress on the exhaust system and potentially damage other, more expensive, components.
Signs that there is a problem with the exhaust:
An increase in engine noise:
Often a loud rumbling sound. This is most likely the first thing you will notice if your vehicle is in need of exhaust repair. The exhaust system is responsible for keeping your engine noise to a minimum, so if you notice an increase in engine sounds, you likely have an exhaust leak. The most likely places you will find an exhaust leak is in the exhaust manifold, or anywhere you find joints in the system. Not only would an exhaust leak cause the engine to get louder, but harmful fumes could possibly make their way into the passenger cabin. If you notice your car getting louder, bring it in right away.
Feeling new/strange vibrations:
If you begin to notice vibrations coming from the gas pedal or your steering wheel, then you may have an exhaust leak. If the leak is large enough, it is possible that you may even feel the whole vehicle begin to shake. Bring your vehicle in for maintenance right away. These vibrations could potentially be a safety issue – as well as a car health issue – because they have the potential to affect your ability to safely control your vehicle.
Your vehicle is not as fuel efficient as it was previously:
Though a decrease on MPG could mean a number of things, an exhaust leak is one of the most common reasons you experience this. Exhaust leaks can result in fumes not being carries away properly, which would cause your engine to run at a higher temperature and reducing fuel economy. So if you notice that you aren’t getting as far on a tank of gas as you used to, bring your car in to have it looked at.
